MISCARRIAGE.

INTRODUCTION

Miscarriage is death of an embryo or fetus before it is able to survive indepen

dently.

EVERYDAY HAPPENINGS

CASE 1

She's been pregnant and has had series of tests to confirm it viz-a-viz urine PT, serum PT, ultrasound scan etc and all of a sudden, she noticed that her tummy isn't growing bigger any longer, her previously kicking baby ain't kicking no more. she became confused and quickly did another pregnancy test which still came out to be positive.
This doubled her confusion and she presented at a hospital where the doctor ordered for an Obstetric ultrasound and broke the news to her that ''i'm sorry ma'am, baby is gone''. WHAT? OMG!!! she screamed and broke into tears, asking why.

CASE 2

This is the 3rd time she will be losing her pregnancy to premature delivery in just about the 4th month of pregnancy. She got really confused, asking why?.

CASE 3

She is 39yrs old and have not been able to carry her pregnancy for more than 3 months. She married at the age of 35 and has been having same experience since then. She got really confused as she couldn't figure out why
CASE 4
She missed her period and got excited. she rushed to do a urine PT which was positive. More excited, she broke the news to her husband. They went to a hospital to book the pregnancy. At the booking clinic, an ultrasound was done and Dr. broke the news ''sorry ma'am, pregnancy not viable, just a ''blighted ovum'' we don't book such for antenatal''. The couple got really confused at this point.

CASE 5

She's been pregnant for 2 months now. she started bleeding, could it be my period? she asked herself. Taking a closer look at the blood, she saw some fleshy parts. Confused, she went to a hospital. Dr. ordered for an ultrasound scan which showed ''Retained product of conception''. she was told she had ''INCOMPLETE ABORTION''. She got really confused at this point.

LET'S SHED LIGHTSđź‘€ ON THE CASES

CASE 1
This is a Silent miscarriage. your Dr. might call it Missed miscarriage or Missed abortion.
if you experience this when the pregnancy had passed the age of viability, your Dr. will call it IUFD {intrauterine fetal demise}. Either ways, fetus is dead.

CASE 2
This is because your cervix which is meant to be closed and remain closed until your pregnancy  TERMS is now incompetent. Therefore, as your fetus continues to grow and gain weight, your cervix won't be able to hold and bear the weight exerted by the fetus again. It opens up and premature delivery results.

CASE 3
The risk of giving birth to baby with genetic disorders is on the increase in women who are 35yrs old and above. By natural process, these fetuses are spontaneously targeted for miscarriage.

CASE 4
This is a pregnancy without an embryo. This is as good as not being pregnant at all. Good news is that you are not likely to experience this more than once in your lifetime.

CASE 5
The remaining product of conception needs to be evacuated as soon as possible.

WHAT TO DO

It is important to see your obstetrician for 'pre-conception counselling' before your next pregnancy. Cheers.
