EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION (PLAN B)

Levonorgestrel (postinor) is used for emergency contraception. Levonorgestrel 1.5mg (postinor-1) should be taken as a single dose within 120hrs of unprotected intercourse;

 alternatively,

Levonorgestrel 0.75mg (postinor-2) can be taken within 72 hrs of unprotected intercourse followed 12hrs later by another 0.75mg.

However, research indicates that both doses of postinor-2 can be taken at the same time up to 120 hours after unprotected sex. The pills are more effective the sooner they are taken, so take 2 Levonorgestrel pills at the same time as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse. You may feel headache, dizziness, nausea and eventually vomit. N.B- If vomiting occcurs within 2-3hrs you may need to repeat a dose, and it might make sense to take some anti-nausea medication.

Postinor basically works by delaying the release of egg from your ovary so it is advisable to use condom till use see your next period (which may be late or earlier than expected)

turn to your doctor if;
• If your period is more than 5 days late, or unusually heavy or light.
• If you are still worried that you are pregnant.
• If you have sudden or unusual pain in the lower abdomen and your period is late.
• If you have any concerns about postinor.

Lastly, postinor medication is relatively SAFE.

  1. Thank you for such an informative post. Sex education surely a very important subject and needs to be addressed, many women are not aware of such contraception methods so I'm sure this was very helpful for them.
